- Borehole drilling and ground loop installation
- Biocide management and ground loop monitoring
Project Details
In the heart of Central London, Onsen Energy embarked on a significant project to support a large-scale ground source heat pump (GSHP) installation. Designed to provide sustainable heating and cooling for a large residential building, this project showcases the immense potential of GSHP technology in urban environments.
The project involved drilling 76 boreholes to a depth of 240 meters each, totalling 18,000+ meters of drilling. These boreholes form the backbone of the ground loop system, which extracts heat from the ground to power the building's heating systems efficiently.
Urban projects like this can present unique challenges, especially in densely populated areas like Central London, but our experienced drilling teams navigated logistical complexities such as restricted site access.
The Onsen Energy team performs a high-level risk assessment on all potential projects. We are certified by the GSHPA, British Drilling Association, RECC, and SMAS. We pride ourselves on our sites' robust health and safety culture.
Key Metrics
- Total Boreholes: 76
- Average Depth Per Borehole: 240 meters
- Total Drilling Depth: 18,707 meters
- Total Installed Borehole Pipework: 23.25 miles
- Completion Timeline: Expected Q1 2025
- Projected Energy Savings: Significant reduction in carbon emissions and operational costs
Project Outcomes
- Multiple boreholes were successfully drilled, and ground loops were installed within exceptionally tight project deadlines.
- All target depths were reached, and the required number of boreholes was completed as planned.
- Stringent safety and compliance protocols were followed, with no incidents or issues reported on-site.
The project demonstrates how GSHP systems can be effectively integrated into commercial buildings, offering a scalable and sustainable renewable energy solution to the energy challenges of densely populated cities.
Onsen’s Opinion
“I can’t thank the team enough for their dedication, hard work, and consistent quality in delivering 18,707 meters of boreholes to support this project.
This is a challenging environment to work in, but our team’s expertise and innovation are turning those challenges into opportunities. I’m a proud leader of this brilliant team and all it’s achieved in the last quarter of 2024.”
